Ancient beauty doctor doll
Ancient beauty doctor doll
TitleAncient beauty doctor doll
DescriptionIvory and wood ; 7'' long; This sculpture would have been used by doctors in China during a specific period of time to diagnose medical conditions in women patients. The woman would point to the place on the doll that corresponded to the place on her body where she needed medical attention. Doctors were forbidden to touch women, and this was the only method available to assist them. This woman is a typical ancient Chinese beauty, who had ''Chan tsu.'' Chan tsu means ''binding of the feet, '' which was done in order to prevent the foot from growing larger than about three inches. The custom of binding female children's feet with silk or cotton and shaping them like a new moon began in the fifth century, and was allowed until the early part of the 20th century. The tiny embroidered shoes for bound feet were often made of satin and decorated with birds and flowers. The ta, on which the beauty is lying, is a kind of long, narrow, low bed. The ta would be used for sitting or lying and would be placed behind a screen. It would be used for resting with privacy in an otherwise ''public'' place of the residence.
