wedding
ceremony
Description

Resin
figures
mounted
on a
black
base;
In
ancient
times
,
young
people
were not
free
to
choose
their
own
marriage
partner.
Instead
,
parents
arranged
marriages
for
sons
and
daughters
, and
often
, a
couple
did
not
know
each
other
before
marriage.
This
souvenir
toy
represents
a
new
couple
in a
wedding
ceremony.
Two
significant
traditions
are not
included
here.
First
, the
bride's
head
would be
covered
with
red
silk.
In
ancient
times
, the
bride
would be
lead
by a
slave
girl
because
the
bride
could
not
see
anything
in
front
of
her.
She
could
only
see
her
feet.
The
bridegroom
would
remove
the
silk
after
the
wedding
ceremony.
Second
, the
hands
on
both
the
bride
and the
bridegroom
would be
bound
in a
red
silk
ribbon
with a
big
red
silk
flower
in the
middle.
It
was
said
that the
bride
and the
bridegroom
were
connected
through
a
string
for a
predestined
relationship
even
when
they were
apart.--4/05
