replica
of a
kneeling
soldier
,
ready
to
shoot
.
It
is
one
of an
estimated
8,000
life-sized
terra-cotta
soldiers
buried
in the
elaborate
tomb
of
Qin
Shi
Huang
,
China's
first
emperor
. The
tomb
is
outside
of the
city
of
Lin
Tong
, in the
Xian
Province
. The
original
statues
were
lined
up
in
military
formation
with
horses
and
weapons
,
which
symbolized
the
emperor's
quest
for
immortality
and
power
.
Each
warrior
was
handmade
by
coil
method
, then
smoothed
over
for the
inscription
of
armor
details
.
After
being
fired
in a
kiln
and
cooled
, the
soldiers
were
painted
with
mineral
and
charcoal
pigments
. The
tomb
figures
and
models
of
other
goods
are
usually
seen
as
mingqi
(spirit
articles)
that
recreated
and
maintained
the
deceaseds
